π₯ "Collective Effervescence" π₯ at the The Marketing Society Annual Conference 2024
π₯ "Collective Effervescence" π₯ is what I believe was experienced by a few if not many of us at the The Marketing Society Annual Conference yesterday.
It's a concept introduced by Emile Durkheim a pioneering French sociologist back in 1912.
π Itβs the rare and powerful feeling of heightened energy and unity experienced during an emotionally intense group gathering. When a group experience a story so moving it leaves a lasting impact on every person present π
β In the session: "Mr Bates V The Post Office. The transformational power of a story of injustice. Well Told" A former Sub PostMaster, Seema Misra, was empathetically interviewed by Maryam Moshiri (The Chief Presenter BBC News).
Seema courageously shared her personal experience of the UK Post Office scandal. Her emotional story included being sentenced for a crime she didn't commit, 4 months in prison....whilst pregnant, social ostracism, public abuse, violence to her husband...the list goes on.
π₯ The room was charged with sympathy, empathy, shock, anger, frustration, respect and admiration.
πΊ What is amazing is that without the people at ITV including Natasha Bondy, Patrick Spence (who were also being interviewed) this would not have reached the level of public awareness, the nation-wide fury and eventual action and IMPACT that it did.
So... π₯ Collective Effervescence π₯ ...quite an experience and one that hopefully drives us all to do the right thing, to support the right people and fight for what we believe in.
Thank you so much to Sophie Devonshireβ‘οΈ, Rachel Letham (Montague-Ebbs), Anna Barber, Ed Dawes, Stacey Telford-Grimmer, Milena Spranger and the full Marketing Society team for such an inspirational day and for the π₯ Collective Effervescence π₯ .
